Launched in 2016, Brice Pauset’s cycle of keyboard works by Johann Sebastian Bach here draws to its conclusion. The principle, always the same, is quite simple : begin with one of the Partitas, which will act as mirror against which to reflect a whole set of other carefully selected pieces. Published in 1731, this Partita forms the first part of the Clavier-Übung. Difficult to perform and exceptionally constructed, the work constitutes a major achievement for the keyboard and one of the highest summits of the composer’s art. To this first Clavier-Übung, Bach adds a second, then a third part, which will this time be devoted to the practice of the keyboard in religious services. This same context is shared by the Choralbearbeitungen that conclude the programme, simple or complex developments on the chorales most often sung by the faithful during Lutheran services.
