*OPÉRA DE DIJON’S CHOIR SOLOISTS
After a battle, three witches appear to Macbeth and hail him as king of Scotland. Obsessed by the prediction, the faithful Macbeth begins to dream of seizing the throne and, pushed by the boundless ambition of his wife, resolves to do that which cannot be undone: one night, he assassinates his sovereign and friend, and usurps the crown. Murder begets murder: to maintain his illegitimate hold on power, to quell suspicion, to drown guilt and silence the ghosts that haunt his mind, Macbeth kills. Surrounded by a growing madness, prey to the paranoia of tyrants, Macbeth falls deeper and deeper into crime until the overflowing blood submerges him, and the forests begin to move before his very eyes. With the first of his three Shakespearian operas, Verdi places at the centre of his dramaturgy the tragic passions experienced by ordinary individuals cast into extraordinary circumstances, and creates the scrupulous, attentive and empathetic echo of emotions and psychological twists and turns of his characters, positive or negative, to share them with us with profound humanity.
The young Italian conductor Sebastiano Rolli and stage director Nicola Raab give body to this tale “full of sound and fury” where man, once again, falls prey to his own faults.
