Awarded the prestigious Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli prize in 2015, the young Georgian pianist Mariam Batsashvili is one of the most promising musicians of the new generation. Her concert at the Dijon Opera brings together the Father of classical music and his turbulent romantic successors. Bach’s Chromatic fantasy and fugueis a harmonic labyrinth of baroque extravagance, which boldly takes the most surprising and unexpected liberties while maintaining the extraordinary rigour of a fugue for three voices. In reply to this digital frenzy from the 18thcentury, we will be offered Liszt’s highly romantic 12 Grand Etudes. These works are among the most exacting in the entire piano literature, prompting Schumann to remark that they were within the purview “of 10 or 12 people at most in this world”. Chopin’s famous Etudes op. n°2will be accompanied here by two other pieces from this amazing collection, where digital virtuosity is pretext to harmonic and melodic invention.
