Joan Manuel Serrat, one of the great names of Spanish and Catalan song, has long been in Spain as in Argentina a figure of resistance against dictatorship. But what is the connection to Leonardo García Alarcón? The relationship dates back to childhood, and to the moments spent by the Argentinian musician in the company of his uncle Alberto, mixing the songs of the Catalan artist and the great classics of western music. From the memories of these shared moments came the idea for this programme, which mirrors modern songs with pages that constitute a bouquet of exceptional variety and quality of the vocal art from Spain’s Golden Century. In responding to them from a distance of four centuries, Leonardo García Alarcón has arranged a series of songs by Serrat, some transformed into veritable polyphonic madrigals in the style of the Golden Century, and all conceived for the voices and baroque instruments of Cappella Mediterranea.
