BERIO | SCHUBERT Rendering
BRUCKNER Symphony n°9 in D minor
After last season’s Mahler/Webern concert, Les Dissonances present yet another singular experience. This time Schubert is called upon to illuminate Bruckner’s last, unfinished score. This Schubert, however, is as unexpected as it is rarely heard, brought to new life by the 20th century composer Luciano Berio. An astonishing work, Renderingtakes fragments from Schubert’s unfinished 10th Symphony and fills the intervening blanks with motifs and citations from these fragments adapted in Berio’s own style. The objective is to create an integral work, separated in the writing by some 200 years, the one in the shadow of the other. Bruckner’s symphony thus is illuminated from two angles: one ahead, opening the path, and the other behind, like a memory, both narthex and apse of this unfinished cathedral of sound that opens up onto a chasm both infinite and suspended.
